| Paratyphoid (Salmonella) has one of the highest mortality rates of any infectious bacterial disease of pigeons. Given the right conditions, the bacterium can remain infective in the environment for 1 year or more. As per Chevita, the maker of Furazolidon Plus, Salmonella is spread by: inhalation of dust containing the pathogen, contaminated feed (insects, mice, rats), dirty feeders and drinkers, mating, transmission from the hen to the egg, and feeding babies with infected crop milk. Cronic Carriers: Pigeons that appear healthy after surviving salmonella infection, but shed the pathogen at irregular intervals and thus pose a risk to the current flock and their young. Acute form (mainly effects adult pigeons) loose, greenish droppings, retardation of growth, loss of weight and in rare cases, death. Chronic form (mainly effects adult pigeons) inflamation causes a thickening of the leg or wing joint. This inflamation causes one wing to hang down or a bird to limp. The birds may have a problem with balance and a twisting of the neck. These symptoms do not always mean you have Paratyphoid (salmonella) as other diseases may have the same symptoms. The Furazolodin Plus Powder is packed 12 envelopes to a box and dosage is 1 enevelope to a 1/2 gallon of drinking water. So a box will make six gallons. Treat for 3 to 5 days, pro-biotics/vitamins for two days and repeat the Furazolidon Plus for another 3 to 5 days followed again by pro-biotics/vitamins for 2 days. The capsules come 100 to a box and treatment is the same time frame as the powder. |
