You simply fill it from the top which fills the varmint proof holding compartment. When your bird hops onto the screened platform, the weight of the bird or birds raises the access door which allows them to feed. When the birds hop off, the door closes. This keeps the feed fresh and the real plus is that it keeps mice or small wild birds from contaminating the feed as their weight will not allow the access door to open. The medium is 16 1/2" wide x 8 3/4" x 16" high and holds approximately 25 lbs. The large is 16 1/2" wide x 8 3/4" x 32" high and holds approximately 77 lbs.
