BOOKS

“Lofts of North America” - This book is the result of over 5 years of work, and I truly believe it is the most anticipated book in many years. As the owner of a major pigeon supply company, we receive inquiries on a regular basis, asking for information about building a loft. This book is meant to give you ideas, not only on what a loft looks like, but it is also full of interior pictures of a loft to give examples of nest boxes, perches, flooring, breeder cages, ventilation, windows, doors, trapping, aviaries, feeders, drinkers, and so much more. We included over 100 lofts from Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, North-South-West and Eastern United States. I did not want just Taj Mahal type lofts that cost a mint, (but there are some in the loft), I wanted the Average Joe loft, Racing Homer lofts, Fantail lofts, Runts, Rollers, Pouters, Dovecoats, Parlor Tumblers and so much more. We have included step by step pictures on building a loft and a page by page diagram with bill of materials to build a 4x8 loft. The book is 99% in color and much of the description text is written by the fancier who built the loft. We have amature builders and professional builders. The book is editing as we go to press with our catalog, so I can not tell you how many pages it is, but it will be over 200 and I can assure you, it will be professionally produced and a book that you will want for the many great ideas offered. Even if you do not plan on building a loft, Lofts of North America will give you a ton of ideas about improving the loft you have. If you would like an autographed copy, please let us know. A Great Gift. I apologize for the high cost, but printing a book in color and what a printer considers a low number, it is very expensive to print. Written by Jerry Gagne.

“Courageous Couriers”

In November 2008 I received a call from Jake Van Dyke of Florance, Alabama. He told me that after the American Pigeon Journal went out of business, a relative of Frank Hollmann, who was a relative and member of the Tennessee Pigeon and Dove Club, acquired the remaining copies of an out of print book called "Courageous Couriers". The relative distributed copies to all the club members and then Jake acquired the remaining books. These books have been in storage for many years and in November 2008, Foy's purchased the remaining books and, while they last, we offer these antique, World War II books to you our customer. This edition was published by Frank Hollmann of The American Pigeon Journal in May 1977.

These "Memoirs of a Pigeon Soldier" and the chronology of events commence with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. It was a well kept secret, but an american infentary division landed in Northern Ireland in Januatry 1912, and by mid 1912 the United States was deploying military pigeon communications detachments to overseas destinations. Chapter 1 covers pigeons and Pearl Harbor. Chapter II covers the pigeon as "Messengers Since Dawn of Civilization".

Many black and white photos are in this 136 page, soft covered book, including many well known and some lesser known pigeon heroes. Army lofts, equipment, personel, methods and training information is in this interesting book. Were you aware that you can train racing homer to fl y two ways, back and forth to two different lofts? This book tells you how to do it.

There is just so much fascinating information. You'll be better informed about your pigeons and you'll also learn much abouthow the Pigeon Corps operated. This is a real collectors book.

“The Search For Those Fabulous Whittinghams” (Rollers)

This is actually a set of two booklets, totaling over 300 pages. This was a home publishing project so be aware the booklets are not professionally done. This is an archival project to preserve elements of the Birmingham Roller history in the United Stats and Canada. These two booklets are an attempt to replace a scrapbook stolen from the United Roller Club in 1937. Both authors Steve Roth and Joe Quinn have maintained private collections of letters, bulletins, articles and personal correspondance. Both authors feared that their collection would be loss on their demise, so they produced these booklets of rollers in the mid 1800's. In the fall of 1947 Bill Pensom came to this country and brought along some of his best rollers which were a mix of the Whittinghams. If you are a fl ying roller/breeder, these books will offer an insight to the history of rollers and make you a better informed roller fl yer. Written by Steve Roth and Joe Quinn. 406 pages.

The Dark and the Light DVD
Like the legs of a race horse, the wings of a racing pigeon are vital to its performance. But each year nature tells a pigeon to change all its feathers and grow new wing flights. The goal of any pigeon trainer is to make sure that this feather growth does not affect his bird's aerodynamic integrity. And the timing of the stressful molt is also a factor in each bird's overall health and stamina. "The Dark & The Light" explains how some of the world's leading pigeon trainers are using the power of daylight to control their pigeon's molt and ensure their birds are in perfect feather during the summer racing season. This film explains when and why pigeons molt and also visits top pigeon fanciers who use either the "Dark" system or the "Light" system with their pigeons. The film follows these fanciers step-by-step as they plan their season and adjust light levels to either stimulate or retard the molting process. Light management is one of the most significant natural developments in the 150th year history of pigeon racing. By carefully controlling daylight a trainer can now dramatically reduce the stress of molting on his team of pigeons, while ensuring each bird has a full wing exactly when they need it most. That is the moment when they leave the release crates at the start of their race to get home.

Schaerlaeckens DVD
He's been called "The King of Orleans" for his three, first-place finishes in what was arguably the world's biggest pigeon race. But Ad Schaerlaeckens is more than Holland's greatest pigeon trainer. For decades he has been the hobby's leading writer, using his sharp mind to analyze how certain fanciers were winning. And using his sharp pen to call attention to the pigeon sport's bad ideas and buffoons. His global fame as one of the sport's living legends has brought Ad more attention than he cares for. And, over the past decade he has retreated more and more from the spotlight. In part it's because he's a private person, but also because the volume of visiting fanciers and inquiries via phone and the internet had become simply overwhelming. Knowing how much people want to hear his opinions led Ad Schaerlaeckens to agree to spend some time in front of a camera with a long-time friend, film maker Jim Jenner. Over a period of three days Schaerlaeckens answered the key questions pigeon fanciers constantly ask him about his methods. He also got to spend time describing his early years with pigeons and the factors that led to his unique view of the sport. Honest, blunt and always a step ahead of the pack, this is Ad Schaerlaeckens. Over more than an hour and half he talks about his basic approaches to selecting pigeons, keeping them healthy and winning races. It's as close as you can come to sitting down with the man himself.
